In spite of rehearsal stress, the
Elisabeth-stars Carsten Lepper (Luigi Lucheni) and Michael Lewis (Kaiser Franz
Joseph) were still eager on being the "guest critics" for
this "Musicals" issue. Although both performers obviously had a
hard day behind them, the emotions still worked up very high with some
songs.
"All I ask of you", from the four track solo CD "All I ask" by Axel
Herrig: who automatically thinks of the romantic musical duet from The Phantom
of the Opera, upon hearing the title, will now be surprised by a cool singing
style and Big Band-Sounds.
- Michael: When you're performing in
a musical, there's always a particular song of which people, that are working in
the production, make a crazy version. When I was playing Raoul in Belgium, we,
the ensemble, often made bad jokes about AIAOY and that is exactly what this
version is: a bad joke! I really do not like it when people release something
like this, even though I do like such Big Band-Sound very much.
"Solla Sollew", interpreted by Donny Osmond, from his solo album "This is the moment". It's a pop version of
the Seussical hit.
- Michael: Fine, calm and sweet - it sounded like it came right from a musical for kids. It has something of a fairy
tale. Nice!
"Suppertime", from the musicalrevue "There's no business like showbusiness", interpreted by
Maya Hakvoort. Our guest critics must know this Dutch lady with the incomparable
voice.
- Michael: I love this "Lazy Jazz" style, this swing, that sounds kind of like "Dick Tracy". And I love this
extraordinary voice, that I recognized immediately and not only because of this
sweet little accent, that she also has when she just talks to you: that's Maya!
I don't know the song itself, but it sounds old-American and is definitely some
classic.
"Let it lie", (remix) from the solo album "Say it" by Drew Sarich. Berlin's ex-"Hunchback" (now starring in the
Vienna production of Hair) gives us, with his first CD, a self-willed mixture of
pop, rock and soul.
- Michael (while listening to it): Do I have listen to the whole thing or can I already stop now? Ah, I do prefer to listen to the whole thing... For my tastes, was this way too
much like disco and dance. I thought that the lyrics were sort of boring.
Although I really paid attention to it, I didn't get the meaning. Actually I
thought that the voice was good, actually too good for this kind of
song.
"Der letzte Tanz", from the solo album "Musical changes" by Felix Martin. Having been the star of the Vienna
production of Elisabeth, this musical star has now released the hit of der Tod himself.
- Michael (while listening to it): What the hell is this? ... Well, in order to enjoy this version, I will probably need some medicins. The voice is totally strong, but it's very
hard to recognize it, since it's fully "weaved" into the synthesizer sound. A pity, because the voice itself is really nice and clear. But the interpretation
is really exaggerated. Plus: the arrangement has no building up - it's exactly the same at the end as at the beginning. Like I already said, it's hard to find
out who's singing it, but could it be Felix Martin?
